Laser cutting is a process in which the energy of the laser beam - either continuous or pulsed - causes either melting of the cut piece alone in the cutting gap, or simultaneous melting and vaporization, or melting and burning of the cut material.
‍Laser cutting is also characterized by a low heat-affected zone, minimal deformation, a narrow cutting gap, a small amount of heat input, clean and perpendicular edges, and very small irregularities in the separation surface. However, the prerequisite for acquiring good cutting quality and maintaining dimensional tolerances of the materials being cut is the precise routing of the cutting beam, combined with a good and stable cutting device with high vibration resistance.

Laser cutting - description of cutting methods

The parameters of the laser cutting process and the surface quality of the final product depend primarily on the method of cutting with this technique. Three laser cutting methods can be distinguished, which include:

  • cutting by slit melting - where the workpiece is melted and blown out thanks to the purified inert gas fed into the laser beam;
  • cutting by combustion - where oxygen or a mixture of gases containing oxygen is used as a gas to assist the cutting process. Burning a given material in a stream of oxygen creates additional heat energy, which greatly accelerates the entire cutting process;
  • cutting by sublimation - where the workpiece within the cutting gap is vaporized in an inert gas environment.
